Mercedes-Benz Stadium Taps the Savannah College of Art and Design to Commission, Acquire and Install Artwork and Memorabilia in New Stadium
Atlanta, Ga. – November 3, 2015 – Atlanta Falcons Stadium Company, developer and operator of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, today announced a new partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to incorporate world-class art into the new stadium. The agreement includes professionally commissioned, selected and installed original artwork, as well as the professional installation of memorabilia. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
With academic locations around the globe, SCAD has won recognition from the American Institute of Architects, UNESCO, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Congress for New Urbanism and others for the adaptive reuse, upcycling, and innovation of its physical spaces. Standing as cornerstones of the university are the AIA-award winning Savannah-based SCAD Museum of Art and the new Atlanta-based SCAD FASH museum of fashion and film. The SCAD Museum of Art features a magnificent permanent collection, including the Walter O. Evans Collection of African-American Art.
“We are delighted to partner with one of our ‘own’ in finishing out the interior and exterior of Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” said Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC, both of which will play its games in the stadium. “With nearly two million square feet of space, there are plenty of opportunities to further enhance this iconic building through art and memorabilia, as well as depict who we are and what our great city and state stand for.”
Throughout the stadium’s interior public spaces and exterior plazas, SCAD aims to provide a surprising and thought-provoking element to the stadium, enhance the fan and guest experience, and amplify the architectural statement of the building. The thoughtful design of these spaces will include a wide array of artistic media from local, statewide, national and international artists. The artwork and memorabilia will be installed prior to the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2017.
“The aesthetic design of any space, public or private, has the power to teach, influence, and inspire,” said SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. “By collaborating with the development team at Atlanta Falcons Stadium Company, SCAD has a unique opportunity to elevate the in-game experience through unforgettable, dynamic art in Atlanta’s new superlative stadium.”
